A firewall is designed to protect a network or network segment
from users on other networks. It is located either at the
Internet gateway of an enterprise or a gateway to a secure area
on a LAN. This way the resources of that company can be protected
by defining and enforcing a company's security policy from the
firewall.

A firewall works in conjunction with a router and after examining
each packet of data and its destination, compares this with a
pre-defined set of rules to determine if it should be granted
access to the network. If it does not meet the criteria defined it
is dropped immediately and refused access. These rules on the
firewall are highly configurable and can be adjusted to meet most
scenarios such as creating a DMZ to allow requests from non-trusted
sources access to a companies Internet services (Web Pages, eCommerce
services).
